MTB circumnavigation of the Wettersteingebirge – Estergebirge

The MTB circuits of the Wettersteingebirge or the Estergebirge are scenically very attractive classics among the mountain bike tours in the Werdenfelser Land. Both are technically relatively easy, but require a lot of stamina (60km/1000m and 85km/1800m routes). Both tours have variable starting points (e.g. from Krün, Klais, Mittenwald, Garmisch or Leutasch (Wetterstein Circuit) or Walchensee (Esterberg Circuit) and can also be done as Bike&Rail tours from Munich or Augsbrug in one day. The tour then starts at the Eschenlohe or Garmisch train stations , Klais or Mittenwald.

MTB circumnavigation of the Wetterstein Mountains

The circumnavigation of the imposing Wetterstein Mountains is also a circuit around the Zugspitze and the peaks that accompany it. The scenic highlights are the turquoise-green Eibsee, steep ascents and descents below the Zugspitze in the Ehrwald area and the beautiful Gaistal with its alpine pastures on the south side. Then it goes through the Leutaschtal to Mittenwald, then past the Ferchensee and Elmau Castle and finally steeply along the Partnach back to Garmisch. The starting point for the round can be agreed individually. There are a few variants possible (more bike paths instead of forest roads from Grainau and Mittenwald), but they do not change the character and length of the tour significantly. Worth mentioning for fans of fast descents is the brisk asphalt descent over 6km from the Hochthörlehütte to Ehrwald. If you want to take it easy on your brakes, you can easily reach 60km/h here.

MTB circumnavigation of the Ester Mountains

The circumnavigation of the Estergebirge also includes a number of scenic highlights: The beautiful and sometimes mystical Eschenlainetal with some worthwhile MTB trail passages and bathing pools, the Loisachtal and the Mühlbach with the 7 springs, the upper Isar valley near Wallgau and Krün. Detours to the Zwergern peninsula in Walchensee (with bathing opportunities) and via the Esterbergalm are conceivable and doable if you have not exhausted your stamina. Opportunities for breaks and snacks on alpine pastures and in cozy valley inns are possible throughout the tour.
